The Succulent Heart Garden

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

A vertical garden that’s a breeze to care for – what a loving gift! We’ve offered this succulent heart for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day because it shows your feelings in its beautiful heart shape. Its progress of green growth and flowering echoes the growth of love. We have a few left here in the store, each with its own natural character.

ABOVE: Hardy sempervivum and echeveria succulents thrive on a vertical frame in the shape of a heart. A weekly soaking in the warm season keeps this garden vibrant. Who wouldn’t be touched by this easily growing gift?

The Heartwood Panel

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

These elegant wood pieces make a powerful gift. Grooved into portraits of hearts inspired by natural anatomy, each unique plaque’s simple lines conjure the elegance of Victorian science and the visceral intensity of real bodies. We love their beautiful effects. The Heartwood Panel can be purchased here at the store, or in our Web Shop.

A Gift of Succulent Craft

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

No one forgets a gift you made yourself. And everyone can keep a succulent growing. What better gift than something you made with succulents? We can make it easy!

succulent bouquet by Susie Nadler

ABOVE: We often call them “forever flowers” around here because they’ll stay lovely for weeks or months after cutting. The succulents are mounted on wires so they can be arranged in a bouquet. And here, we’ve combined them with feathers and tied them with a bow. The bouquet lasts for weeks, but when the plants tire of living inside, the bouquet above can easily generate a new planting that will bring your gift recipient a whole new phase of appreciation.

tillandsia and succulent cutting

ABOVE: Something about incorporating succulents and tillandsia air plants into a lichen- and moss-encrusted branch turns these naturally beautiful woodland artifacts into magical gardens, each like a living architectural model of an aerie in the jungle.  Some people think they look like the belong under water.

Haworthia wall bubble terrarium

ABOVE: Succulents are among the best plants for terrariums, because they hold up so well over time, feature fascinating detail, and effect delightful sleights of scale for that landscape-in-a-bottle feeling.Planting succulent compositions allows you to create miniature landscapes with the air of bonsai but without bonsai’s intricacies of care. It takes time to get these right, but it’s a really fun process of figuring how to combine varied textures, scales, and colors.

ABOVE: An undrained container can be planted with succulents if you water very carefully. Then you can place it on an indoor surface without worrying about the drainage. Isn’t it just lovely? We’ve got loads of different containers to chose from to create your own, and we are happy to help you select the right plants.

Planting a vertical panel with succulents

ABOVE: For the patient, growing a succulent vertical garden allows you to create your own painterly designs that you can watch grow and change over time, like a happier version of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Much happier.

ABOVE: After planting a vertical panel, it will need a few warm months to grow in on a horizontal surface, after which it can be mounted vertically.

We’re  hoping this gallery of succulent craft inspires you to make something for yourself or a loved one.
