Habitat Wall Sculptures by Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith is a skilled woodworker, builder, and artist. Admire his work at both locations of Sightglass Coffee, or right here in the live-edge walnut counters in our washrooms. One of his art pieces that attracted a lot of attention was this wall sculpture, pictured below. He and his collaborator Lisa Lee Benjamin assembled foraged organic materials and reclaimed scrap into a habitat-in-waiting for bees, birds, and other native animals. Now has installed a new piece here for you to admire. Come see it!
ABOVE: The patterns of holes and partitions that Kevin and Lisa designed allows many different species of small animals to inhabit the sculpture, whether it’s mounted on an apartment terrace 16 stories above the street or next to a backyard patio. As part of the Urban Hedgerow campaign, Kevin interprets the invitation to urban wilderness in a really beautiful way, one that seduces us into contemplating how much wild nature we want to interact with in our human-centered habitat. Kevin has made several of these pieces for our customers. If you’d like to contact him about building one for you, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
