String of Hearts

One of our favorites -a rare and exquisite variegated String of Hearts plant (Ceropegia woodii ‘Variegata’). Its heart-shaped leaves are strung together on delicate vines, like a tangle of precious necklaces.

Shades of mauve, dusty pink, silver, and butter yellow are scattered across the variegated foliage with a soft patina. When it blooms (usually in spring or summer), the flowers will look like tiny magenta trumpets.

This plant will grow indoors in bright indirect light or outdoors if sheltered from rain. It's a succulent, so keep the soil fairly dry and give it good drainage.

Originally found in dry, rocky outcrops in its native South Africa, String of Hearts should be grown in an aerated, well-draining soil like our cactus mix. The plant requires bright indirect light or limited direct sunlight. String of Hearts is best fertilized sparingly during the active growing season (spring-summer) with an all-purpose fertilizer diluted to half-strength. This season is when you may see the little blooms!

Considered a caudiciform plant, Ceropegia will develop a woody base at maturity. For a more lush form, we recommend planting Ceropegia in a large enough pot so that the trailing stems can root as they grow across the soil. Mature String of Hearts can trail to several feet long!

We grow String of Hearts ourselves down at Grubb & Nadler wholesale nursery in the Rainbow Valley.

Come see us and pick a String of Hearts with a pretty pot. See you soon!
