A second spring is underway in the Bay Area. October's first rains have fallen and the weather is softening, making now a great time for gardening. Some of our favorite plants are flushing new growth, ready to provide a spectacular show in your fall garden.

The Pumpkin Truck has arrived!
Giant squash! Scary toothy grins! Pie! They're American originals just like Halloween. Our big orange pumpkin truck has arrived bearing gorgeous pumpkins and gourds in cool colors and forms, like jade green, and cream with green and orange netting. Come pick your favorites and get to carving!

Plants for your fall garden
We have beautiful plants in the nursery ripe for fall planting. Exquisite Mediterranean-climate natives, cool-season annuals and vegetables, and hardy plants planted now will flourish in the new year while adding structure to your designs as the flowery season fades. Plus, when you plant before a good rainy winter, you save precious irrigation water.

Phoenix dactylifera 'Zahidi'
Upon arriving at our nursery, the tallest tree you see is a date palm, Phoenix dactylifera 'Zahidi'. We planted it when we were building our new store, in February of 2007. It came from a farm in the desert of Southern California, lying on its side on a truck with a small root ball and a tight topknot of blue-green fronds, a few remnant ripe dates hanging on. We used a small crane to lift it into its hole and plant it, and it has not so much as blinked since then. It feels like it's been a part of the landscape here for a long time. The rustling of its beautifully colored leaves overhead goes a long way to giving us that urban oasis feeling every city garden should have. The pattern of knobs on the trunk makes a visual impact that no other tree can.

Perhaps you've heard about the recently sprouted 2000-year-old seed of a date palm, the oldest seed ever to prove viable. Date palms are tough cookies, standing up to heat, cold and wind. As the oldest cultivated fruit tree, the date has been bred in many varieties; ours, the Zahidi, is suited to our foggy weather, although - alas - it will never produce edible fruit for us. We recently planted a trio of them in a garden Flora is designing here in San Francisco. Aren't they pretty?
