Japanese Maples: Our Springtime Treat

The maples are here for 2024! We’ve got some nice ones for you to choose from, along with other springtime beauties like magnolias, dogwoods, gingko, and more.

Every year in the spring we receive a smattering of Japanese maple varieties, and we all get so excited when the truck arrives.

Most of these trees are field-grown in Oregon, and the cold northern winters put them into a deeper dormancy than in our own coastal climate. This means they will burst with intense color—especially during their first year in the Bay Area—with tones ranging from chartreuse to electric orange to deepest purple. Moving to our climate forces the trees into leaf almost immediately.

We carry unique varieties with classic upright forms, cascading forms, gnarled knobby trunks, "snake" bark, and more, with leaves ranging from the classic maple "hand” to rounded moon-leaf shapes to finely dissected wispy-feathery leaves.

Japanese maples can only be grown outdoors. They need a low-wind spot, part shade and part sun, in order to thrive.
